Global Issues Portfolio Reflection
3rd World Farmer Reflection
Describe the game. What was the purpose of the game?
The purpose of the game is to learn about the life in Africa. It’s to learn how the choices you make as a farmer and a citizen of Africa can have an impact on your life.
Describe and explain your strategy during the game.
My strategy during the game was mainly to provide enough food for each person, and enough food for them to get back quite a bit of money. If I had enough money with at least 50 left over to buy help from animals or supplies for the house, or school, or more shelter, I would use that money for the family. If and when once in a while, we have pig diseases or chicken diseases or peanut harvest diseases – to prevent these problems from affecting my family’s life, I would always put a different variety of foods, not just many of one type, or I could loose a lot of money.
What is a short- term decision?
Doing something that won’t benefit you in the future. E.g. selling your kid or giving your family medicine.
Why are they bad?
Short-term decisions are bad because the one person that you medicated could die in the near future and all the money you spent on that person will be of waste.
Why could somebody in a situation of poverty get stuck in a cycle of short-term decision-making?
A person stuck in poverty could get stuck in a cycle of short-term decision-making because maybe they have little money and have to act fast to get more money in order to serve them their needs.
What could get them out of this cycle?
Planting crops and just going by luck sometimes.
What is a long-term decision?
Something that will take a year J
Why are they good?
They are good because they can provide you with a lot of money.
Why do long-term decisions lead to development and increased standards of living?
Because they usually provide the health of the family and also, the money and supplies to live.
What did you learn from playing this game?
You have to make the right choices or you can die easily.
Which SLR does this experience identify most closely with and why?
Live Ethically, because you have to make the right choices, by being ethical :) .
